Abbey Archaeological Dig June 2019, September and October 2020, July and August 2021 The geophys investigations which looked for evidence of Ickleton Priory at Abbey Farm by Archaeological Rheesearch group in 2016 (see album), showed possible footings of a building. Attracted by this, the Cambridge Archaeology Field Group undertook a dig in June 2019. The trench revealed a great many flints not far below the surface, some of which were bound in mortar suggesting walls. There were a number of medieval finds as well as pre- and post-medieval items. The trench was reopened and the dig continued in September and October 2020. There were more finds similar to those of 2019 and the trench is now almost at the medieval floor level. The dig continued in summer 2021 and concluded with an open day and display of finds. It was clear there had been much activity in the area but it was almost certainly outwith the precincts of the Priory.Thumbnail:
