From Fire to Frescoes 24-26 August 2019

On the night of 24 August 1979 an arsonist set fire to Ickleton Church.  The ensuing fire caused much damage but in the course of renovation, 12th and 14th century wall paintings were discovered (see albums in the Building Details, Church folder).  To mark the 40th anniversary of the fire and to help start fund raising towards work need to conserve the paintings, the Ickleton Society put on a major exhibition about the fire, the wall paintings, the rededication of the Church and visit by Prince Philip as well as the history of the Church generally.  Hilary Rule who, together with her husband Derek, discovered the fire and Rosemary Hayes spoke about the events of 1979 and 1980 and art historian Paul Shakeshaft gave a talk about the wall paintings, their uniqueness and great importance.
