Mowbrays, Church Street 1949, 2004, 2021

The land and farmhouse of the manor of Mowbrays were bought by the Cambridge college of Clare Hall in 1819 and incorporated the lands of Limburys manor owned by Clare since at least 1546. The house is listed Grade 2* and dates from the 15th century when it had a central hall and 2 cross wings. A small wing was added to the east. In the late 17th century, the hall was rebuilt and raised to 2 storeys faced with brick and a wing added to the west. Other changes were made in the 19th and 20th centuries including a modern extension at the rear of the former central hall. In June 2021, after the tenancy had been held by 2 generations of the Driver family for over 86 years, it was handed back to Clare College. For photos of views from the street, see the album 'Church Street' in 'Streets, Buildings and Views' and for other historical details see D071, D670 and D682 in 'Documents' plus various other documents from D667 to D694.
